My students need basic school supplies in order to achieve high levels in the 6th grade. These supplies include pencils, erasers, sharpeners, notebooks, and folders.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Growing up, school supply shopping was one of my favorite parts of summer break. All the new brightly colored notebooks and pencils made me so excited for the upcoming year of learning and new friends! Unfortunately, for my middle school students, school supply shopping is very stressful.
My group of sixth graders are general education students as well as students with special needs.
Unfortunately, their first thoughts about the school year aren't filled with excitement; rather, they are filled with hardship when they face the burden of buying their own school supplies. More than 70% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and live below the poverty line, making it extraordinarily difficult for their parents/themselves to purchase school supplies. Without a pencil or sheet of paper, my students are unable to do basic learning activities such as taking notes and tests. When I walk into my classroom to begin another year of school for them, I want to be able to provide them with the basic supplies they'll need to get excited and invested in their own learning and what is to come in our classroom.
My Project
If my students have notebooks, pencils, erasers, and other basic school supplies they will be able to participate in classroom activities such as discussions, brainstorming sessions, and group work. As their teacher, providing them with these supplies will help me to alleviate the stress of financial hardship they may be facing, and use that energy to motivate them in the classroom.
Without these necessary school supplies my students won't be able to participate in my classroom or as they continue in their education.
With these supplies I'll be able to ensure that they get back on track and are prepared to succeed in the 6th grade and beyond.
