I teach fourth grade at a Title One school in Utah. Each one of my students has a unique background and tale to tell. The stories they share bring me laughter, joy, heartbreak, understanding, compassion, and hope.
This year.
in particular, I have been so impressed by their willingness to translate for me, help a friend who has fallen, step in and do someone’s class job that was undone, and learn. They are quick to respond to corrections and strive to do their best. They have made teaching a joy again!
I have been impressed with their academic growth this year as well. Sadly, the majority of my class is behind in terms of where a typical fourth grader should be. These kids were in second grade when everything shut down due to the pandemic, so they missed almost half a year of school and many were distance learners last year. This is evident in their math and literacy skills. We have much ground to cover in the next few months, but I am excited to lead them forward!
My Project
These materials will help my students to navigate their Chromebooks easier and have materials they can/will use on a daily basis. These materials are things I have wished I had available to me several times this year. For example, my current student whiteboards are well used and are hard to erase. My kids will enjoy having a clean slate when doing our daily math review.
These materials will also help students master math facts and practice various literacy skills.
The games will allow my students to practice multiplication, making change, finding main idea, using context clues, and other topics in a fun way. They do love getting to play the games that are in my cupboard!
I know all of these items will help make up the gaps that have been created by COVID 19.
