This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 2nd grade (7-8 year-olds). My students are excited to learn this year, however many of them are overstimulated in the classroom environment. They are so sweet and try so hard to be successful learners despite some difficult home lives.
My school has a focus on literacy this year, and the students are 100% on board.
All they want to do is read, read, read. I caught one of my boys reading under his desk on the first day of school when he was supposed to be doing another activity. Another student's first words to me before school even started were, "You know, Ms. M, I can read now." They are very proud of the new skills they are learning in 2nd grade.
My Project
The students in Ms. Mallette's class will benefit greatly from a more comfortable library environment. The class will use beanbag chairs to have a cozy space to take a break from their hectic days and read a book. The lamps and fairy lights will help make the entire classroom environment more comfortable as our overhead lighting is quite harsh and overstimulating.
These items will foster the students love of reading as well as give them a comfortable space to relax.
Sometimes our days can be overwhelming, and the students need a way to calm down in order to continue learning.
