My students need leveled readers to improve their fluency and reading skills. I want to use these books to show the kids that reading is an adventure that can take them anywhere they want to go.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi! I teach resource reading, special education. They have hearts of gold and simply lack the confidence in their reading abilities. They have so much within them and simply need a good confidence boost to show them that they are capable of conquering their fear of reading. My kids have disabilities that range from learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, autistic, and intellectually disabled. The majority of my students are also identified within the low socio economic range.
When Hurricane Harvey hit, my kids were affected on a scale that most adults were not prepared for.
They lost their homes, parents lost vehicles, they were placed in shelters and were rescued from their homes. When they came back to school, they were not only telling me their stories, but one of their first questions was, but how are you doing? Is your family okay? Was your car ok? I was so concerned with their well being and making things normal for them, that I did not stop to think that they were worried about me. This is why I consider myself blessed each day to be able to teach these kids on a daily basis. Truly some of the best kids.
My Project
My kids view reading as something more like a hard chore than something that they enjoy. When I teach I am pulling resources from all sorts of places to make reading come alive for them and to show them that reading is something that they can do.
Reading is like the book "Harold and the Purple Crayon", it takes them on adventures that they never thought they could go on.
It allows them to see that they ARE good readers and that they CAN do anything they set their mind to. I want them to see reading as something amazing.
