My students need a space that is inviting and warm so that they feel as special as they are. They also need tools to be organized and materials to succeed.

My Students

My students look and talk like other students, but they have secrets. Most of them have experienced childhood trauma or are currently experiencing some type of trauma outside of school. They are learning to regulate their emotions and behaviors in order to learn independence and to further their education. Our alternative school prepares our students on how to deal with their emotional and behavioral disabilities so that they may return to their neighborhood school. Our goal is to strengthen them.

My Project

Certain sensory and environmental factors can cause our students to experience emotional crises. My first step in deescalating dangerous behavior is to transform and create the perfect learning environment. In turn, I hope to also achieve engagement and enthusiasm from my learners. As a first year teacher, I need as much help as I can get. My school is older and my classroom needs some work. Pictured to the right is my classroom as it currently looks. With the help of my community, I know that I can show my students that I care about the space we share and the learning that will take place in this space and transform the space.

It is my hopes that my classroom will become a safe haven, magical getaway, and literary wonderland for my language arts students, providing them with feelings of safety and comfort.

Lamps and string lights will help create warm, comforting lighting to ease students' moods. The office supplies will be used in various projects and activities. My students will use composition books to journal each day, and we will create portfolios with the accordion files for students to put their work in all year. They will be able to use these for job interviews or show them to their parents or guardians. Many of the other products will assist me in providing organization. This is important for my students as they do not experience order in many other areas of their life.

It is my hopes that I can achieve my goal of creating a beautiful, inspiring classroom. I hope that I can take my students on a literary journey and share with them a world of reading and writing in a beautiful space.
