This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Ms. Griffin, I love reading, I wish we had our old books back." My 24 third graders have been affected by a bad storm that destroyed our classroom library. My most struggling readers love to read, but we currently do not have books that are on their reading level that they can read.
When I look across my classroom, I see 24 of the most energetic and brilliant third graders.
My students are residents of west side of Chicago. In order for my students to arrive to school they need to cross gang territory, drug dealers and other horrible things. My students all know someone who has been shot and murdered in their short life time. Despite all of these things that would make many of us shudder, this group of third graders are bright-eyed and excited to be at school everyday. My students love learning, asking questions and most importantly, they love reading. My school is a charter school and we serve students from all over the city. The population is 98% free and reduced. My classroom is 100% African-American.
My Project
Our school recently encountered a devastating loss of many materials. My classroom lost all of our leveled library books. I am requesting books so that my students especially my most struggling students can have books in their hands that are on their level. Research shows, that struggling readers that read with books at their level make huge gains in reading, many of these children can make as much as 1-1.5 years growth in a year. With the generous donations to this project, we will see awesome students make huge gains in reading.
I am requesting books that are high-interest and at the right level for my most struggling students.
Have you ever seen a student light up, because they can read a book they really love? It's magical!
Thank you for your support for my students, the books they will receive will continue to support their love for reading.
