Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a place of challenge and discovery. Students will be spending this year learning the foundation of knowledge and skills they will need as they move forward in advanced studies. The obstacle, at the moment, is that my bookshelves are empty!
My students are 7th and 8th graders in CPS, and many are bilingual and/or ELL students that need access to books in Spanish and English.
They are excited to explore the world of literature, to expand their capacity for critical thinking, and to practice reading in their home language. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning. Many of the students are bilingual and strive to be in proficient in both English and their home language.
CPS is currently weathering severe budget cuts, resulting in a lack of resources, larger class sizes, and more. By providing abundant learning materials, academic supports for unique learning needs, current technology, and community and parental resources, Bridge School will nurture and encourage a generation of life-long learners.
My Project
How can a student practice their Spanish and strive to become bicultural without books in Spanish? How can students be introduced to other cultures and walks of life without the stories and voices of other people? Where can students find books that reflect their family's (and even their own) experiences? With a little help, my library will be a place where students can peruse a wide variety of genres, from today's must-read books to books that are inclusive of other cultures and ways of life.
By donating, you are helping me create a classroom library filled with books that will encourage students to practice their literacy skills as well as further their fluency in more than one language.
Middle school is a time where many students begin exploring their identities and figuring out who they really are as a people. Books have always been a great avenue of exploration. You can help us create a library that will help inspire my students, encourage them to explore other cultures, learn more about history, and continue their enjoyment of reading.
