Ms. Abbey's Reading Project from Puerto Rico to Youngstown
My students need to learn how to read. Not only is language a struggle, but being able to read in class is practically impossible when you don't speak or read in English.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is amazing, I'm sure all teachers say this, but I truly believe we have been blessed with a lot of amazing kiddos and staff this year. We are a low income district and building that serves grades PK-8, with approximately 75 Spanish speaking students, 20 being newcomers from Puerto Rico and other areas.
Specifically, we have a large influx of students who are new from Puerto Rico, they are learning to speak English, read, write, and understand what is happening all around them.
As their TESOL, or English teacher, I find that we do not have enough resources for them to use in their class that meets their level of understanding. I would like to have a resource that I can use to work with their concepts in the general education class.
My Project
My project is to expand the language library for our EL students. This library will be both for our bilingual population and our struggling learners. This library will contain many bilingual story books and readers. But it will also contain leveled readers that the students can read on their own and gain reading fluency and confidence.
The books will be used to help students and families grow their love for reading in and out of the classroom.
The books will join a family of bilingual story books that we already received from a donors chose project. The students are in love with them, but with only 1 book per child we are flying through reading them. We are so blessed by them.
The new books will help push the struggling readers and the non-readers to better their English understanding. The will use them at home and with their peers in class. These books will be a transitional step into lifelong reading.
