My students need 30 calculators to improve their math fluency and learn how to correctly use a calculator. My students also need a full size rug to gather together.
This school year I will be teaching Math, Science, & S.S. This is a first time our 3rd grade has departmentalized. I'm excited to start the day & end it with Math! I want my students to enjoy math as I do! “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin
Our third graders come to us from all different income levels and backgrounds.
Most students have parents working two and three jobs just to barely make it. Most can hardly provide the basic school supplies for the beginning of the year. Our school district was lucky enough to receive the free breakfast and lunch for all students. Out of my 21 students last year, at least 18 ate breakfast every morning in my classroom.
I have, in previous years, purchased a few calculators from the dollar section out of my own pocket. However, these are not the best and hardly make it a semester. It's also a challenge when teaching calculator skills for all of us to have different calculators. With a class set, students will be able to watch as I model and then do the steps themselves. Students will be able to work out the problems and then use the calculators to check their work. Students will also use the calculators during centers to work multitask word problems to build their math skills. Having a nice big rug for our classroom will be great for our class "morning meeting" and gathering time. Students will also be able to use the rug area during center time as a place to spread out in the classroom and not just sit in a desk.
Having the class set of calculators will provide all students with the "same" calculators.
Some students often feel upset when they don't have a calculator and have to "borrow" one. Students will be responsible for their own calculator and feel a sense of ownership and responsibility. I think having a nice big carpet for the students will allow for more center space in the classroom and allow students to move freely during center time. Student will also have a nice place during morning meeting.
