This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are what keep me going every day! Without them my days would be boring, my nights would be short, and my life would be missing something. As a teacher in a low-income school my students face many challenges in and out of school, and my hope is to create an environment that is a safe space for my students.
I teach mostly 9th grade and from my experience they are full of energy and are living a 21st century lifestyle!
So I've been thinking that my classroom should match that!
My students are bright individuals. Working with 9th graders has allowed me to see students grow from scared underclassman to confident sophomores. Our school goal is to help all students achieve, and to encourage them to go after their dreams.
My Project
Flexible seating is not only about creating cozy and attractive Instagram worthy classrooms. Ultimately for me it is about my students. Flexible seating not only provides an environment that is ideal for collaboration, but it helps students get moving and supports physical health.
Flexible seating also allows students choice which is imperative for high school students.
By allowing students to sit where they feel comfortable they are taking charge of their education and ensuring they are engaged through lessons. The Buschman Galvanized stools will give students another option of seating for students and would help them collaborate at a table. The Big Joe bean bag chairs will be located in my reading lounge so students can be comfortable while doing independent reading. The other seating options will be located around the room to encourage collaboration, and the 30 pack of Hardboard Clipboards will offer a surface for students to write on while moving about the room during stations time.
This project will not only change my classroom, but will allow me to change my teaching--to a 21st century outlook. This will empower and engage my students while also allowing me to change my teaching strategies.
