Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I begin teaching in January and am so excited! The school community is in a lower socioeconomic area of the city. While we are currently learning remotely due to COVID19 cases, it has been an opportunity to connect with families in ways we are not ordinarily able as we are given access to their home lives and parents through virtual, live meetings. Our students are creative, insightful, social learners and love reading stories together and listening to books and reflecting on ideas about the topics. Our students are eager to learn and look forward to the time we can be together again.
My Project
Students in third grade are often interested in animals, their habitats and how things work. Creating a classroom library with that in mind will allow my students to read and browse books during independent reading time. While we are learning virtually, these books compliment science units as well as the multicultural book set helping create an inclusive atmosphere in a diverse community. Often the students enjoy sharing what they've discovered in certain books they've chosen with friends at the end of our quiet reading time. I'm excited to include these titles!
