This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 7th and 8th grade students are looking for academic success but are often lack the coping skills necessary to navigate todays challenges in school, home and their social life.
Many of my students are facing challenges such as unstable home lives and lack parental support, mental health issues and learning disabilities.Many students struggle with trusting others, poor coping skills, poor emotional regulation and lack conflict resolution skills.
My students want to learn and be successful academically, socially and emotionally.
My Project
My students need a safe place where they can go when they need to escape the pressures of school. The calm corner will allow students to learn and practice coping skills to use when feeling angry, anxious, nervous, sad ect. These skills can better prepared students to deal with the academic stressors of school and life.
Items that I have choosen are to make a comfortable and calm seating area in my office, with objects and tools to help manage their anxiety and anger.
This includes bean bag chairs, fidget toys, kinetic sand and learning materials to deal with emotional regulation.
