I teach a group of amazing fifth graders with various needs and abilities. We spend the majority of our day in the classroom learning, growing, and becoming a family. Something many of my students struggle with is being able to concentrate and do their best, because they are sitting in a regular chair all day.
Do you remember being a student or having a student who couldn’t sit still or focus while at school?
I do. I was that student. As a student, I would have rather worked in various places around the room. To this day, I’d much rather be sitting on a ball or on a cushion on the floor while doing my work.
My vision is to give my students a work space that helps them grow, become inspired, and helps their love for learning blossom. If I am able to get this project fully funded, I will have that opportunity!
My Project
Flexible seating allows students of all abilities to work in an environment that best suites them. Flexible seating gives my students that independence they are wanting, because they are given the choice to sit where they feel is best for them! My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive when they are given a choice of where to work. With flexible seating, my students will be more comfortable in the classroom. Being more comfortable allows them to focus on their work. The students who constantly have to fidget will now have an outlet that is not disrupting to the rest of the class or affecting their work and ability!
For my flexible seating classroom, I am wanting to give students the opportunity to sit on the floor, at desks, or stand at taller tables.
The first item I am wanting for my classroom is the Flex-Space comfy floor seat, in green. In my flexible seating classroom, I will have two low tables where the students will sit on the floor. With these seats, students will have the option to sit directly on the floor, or to use one of these awesome seats. The backs of these seats are adjustable to fit the height of each student using them!
The other item that I am requesting is the Flex-Space balance seat 22", in green. In my flexible seating classroom, I will have two clusters of regular desks. At these desks, I would love to give my students the option to use one of these balance balls instead of the regular desk chairs. The balance balls not only help with my students who like to constantly move, but they are also great for the students' overall health.
