Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach an inclusive pre-k class at a Title I School in Maryland where a little over 80% of our students receive free and reduced-price meals. Currently, 2/3 of the students in my classroom are special education students with an IEP or ELL students from the age 3-4 with varying disabilities. These students light up my life in so many ways and are making huge gains each and every day at school! I couldn't be prouder of them!
My students struggle with the behavioral, academic, and social demands of an educational setting.
Having limited flexible seating options and sensory input/output activities to assist and motivate my students in the classroom is a daily struggle. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to do their best each and every day! They want to come to school and their love for learning melts my heart in ways I could've never imagined!
My Project
The use of flexible seating with the wobble seats, Cube Chairs, and supportive chairs with backs for the carpet will dramatically increase my students’ ability to sit comfortably in whole group instruction on the carpet for an increased amount of time. Currently, a whole group instructional setting is extremely difficult with students’ sensory needs which truly affects their ability to sit on a carpet in the classroom and attend to instruction. Students are uncomfortable and need to have the ability to move. Even with brain and movement breaks it is still extremely difficult for my three and four year old students with various needs to sit for periods of time longer than 5 minutes. By having various types of seating options to meet all of my students needs, students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning!
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase students’ ability to focus, you will ultimately help to increase their availability for learning within a classroom!
Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material presented, and not displaying various forms of behaviors if their sensory needs are not being met. In addition to flexible seating options to meet sensory needs, I would love to include various resources to meet their sensory needs on a visual and tactile level. I would love to incorporate magna tiles, sensory foam paint, sensory light activities with sensory light table, sensory table beads, noodles, and etc. Research shows that students with sensory needs are not able to take in and retain information if their needs are not first met. It is my goal to meet the needs of all of my learners and this project will certainly help me take a giant step!
