Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I tell people that I teach high school chemistry, the first thing they say is, "I'm sorry! I hated that subject!" I want my students to have positive memories of their experiences in my class. They should look back at their time with these computers in this lab as some of the best!
My students come from low socio-economic families, many of which have never had a parent complete high school, let alone college!
Adding to the challenge, most are doing their best to learn English along with the periodic table. My lab is in various states of decay, with some new supplies that I have fought long and hard for, while other areas, such as technology are just beyond what I can do myself. These students are under-served at home and at school.
Through all the challenges that life throws at them, they're still incredibly optimistic about their futures. Despite many not having access to a computer at home, they are constantly inquisitive about new technology. These computers will not only help them to learn chemistry, but it will aid them in developing the technology skills they need to face the 21st century job market.
My Project
With these computers, I will be able to "flip" the classroom! This makes the learning experience student-centered rather than teacher-centered. They will be able to engage with the material on a deeper level by using online resources such as virtual labs, interactive tutorials, and so much more! The student centered classroom allows for a personalized educational experience where no student is left behind! They can proceed at their own pace while still receiving personalized assistance from me.
Each day, with laptops in hand, chemistry becomes more than just a class period, but an educational adventure!
