I teach in a life skills special education classroom. My students, grade 3-4, struggle accademically as well as with sensory and inattention concerns . Many come from low-income families and have parents who also struggle in both of those areas.
My students work so hard everyday, but need more significant breaks and interventions to stay on task.
Because I have a lack of supplies, brain breaks, flexible seating, and sensory breaks are more difficult to implement. My students need a variety of fidgets, brain break strategies, and sensory materials to begin learning to recognize when their body and mind is hitting its breaking point and implement a strategy that works for them.
My students are amazing kids who have their share of struggles. All of my students struggle academically, and many struggle with regulating their bodies and maintaining focus, and regulating their emotion.
My students would benefit from instruction and tools that will help them learn strategies to control both their bodies and their emotions and maintain their focus.
They will use the fidget toys, rocker chairs, and yoga balls during brain breaks or times of focus difficulties or frustration to self regulate and get back on task. Improved self-regulation will transition into adulthood and the work world as the students grow.
