My Students

" The greatest gift is a passion for reading" - Elizabeth Hardwick My students strive every day to become readers. I strive to give them the tools they need to be enthusiastic readers.

Mrs. H.'s "Ready Readers" are a lovely group of public school first and second grade students who struggle to attain reading skills.

This diverse group of student vary in their abilities. Each student has an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). While there are many goals within their plan, reading is the main focus.

My Project

The materials I am requesting includes a leveled library appropriate for pre-kindergarten through second grade, additional nonfiction leveled readers, and leveled book activity box. The NYS common core focuses on nonfiction reading. At this time I have a limited amount of this particular resource. The students in my class are first and second graders, but are below grade level in their abilities. Having a leveled library would insure that there are nonfiction books that are appropriate for each of my students. The leveled library activity box provided students with activities related to the the text they read. This particular item, is meant to help students increase independence with reading. while assessing comprehension. The activity box would be beneficial in helping my students become more independent readers and helping them meet their IEP goals.

The students I work with vary in their abilities, but generally come to me with little to no reading readiness skills.

As a primary special educator, my primary focus is to teach these students not only to read, but to love reading. Reading is the core to all academics. Without a strong reading foundation, a child will struggle in all areas. Giving the gift of reading to my students will instill a lifetime of confidence that they will bring with them throughout their lives.
