We are a seaside community that has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our island town doesn't have a single home that was left undamaged. Many of my students homes are still uninhabitable almost nine months after the storm.
We thought that restarting school would add a sense of normalcy to the chaos that permeates our students' lives.
In some ways it has.
One of the things I've noticed since we've restarted is that our kids are dealing with more than we ever expected.
My Project
Since our school was hit by Hurricane Harvey, we have struggled with simple things. Seating, work areas, and even supplies have been an issue.
Through generous donations to our projects we have been truly blessed.
We still, however; continue to struggle in some areas. The items we have included in this projects will allow my students to find a sense of normalcy and allow them to work in a dedicated space. New spaces are being added to my room to allow different learning styles. Markers, chalk, lighting and hard surfaces for working in an area besides a desk are some of the items requested. I am moving into a non-traditional seating arrangement, therefore the tall table with stools. This will allow students to sit and/or stand.
