Mrs. Haase is My Name, Hands-On Learning is My Game
My students need Hot Dots pens and activity cards, Word Building Dominoes, and Learning Puzzles to keep the students engaged during ELA and math stations.
When it comes to keeping my students fully engaged, nothing competes with technology and hands-on games. In 1st grade, we are all about learning by doing and making that learning fun by doing relevant activities they enjoy.
My students are both enthusiastic and intelligent.
At a Title 1 school, many of our students come from modest upbringings and are so excited to come to school where they know they are loved and also safe.
In 1st grade, they often have a short attention span for anything they don't see value in; so it is extra important to keep them busy with activities they enjoy yet can learn from at the same time.
My Project
For our Language Arts block, we use the Daily 5 model which allows the students to stay actively engaged in what they are doing. They also are wild about math stations in the afternoon to reinforce the new math concepts that are taught.
The Hot Dots, Learning Puzzles, and Word Building Dominoes will be used during these math and language arts stations time. They are very important to me because I am looking for new ways to present the same materials in class in a way that they aren't bored with. The variety in their station time keeps them intrigued and engaged. This will allow me to beef up my stations in both subject areas.
My students are like little sponges - always ready and willing to soak up more.
Sometimes we get caught in a rut with the same Daily 5 and math station offerings. By expanding the choices during our daily rotations, the students will maintain their eagerness to learn and excitement about school and specifically my class. I thank you for taking the time to hear my story.
