Have you ever been told to share a tight space with 28 of your closest classmates and expected to work hard so that you can learn all you needed to know? Have you had those 28 classmates sit on your hands and feet because everyone was lacking personal space? My students face this challenge daily!
I teach Pre-Kindergarten at a Charter school in Texas and 97% of the student population is considered below the poverty line.
The majority of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch and many cannot even afford basic supplies for the classroom.
My students are fun loving, adorable, and eager to learn. They enter the classroom with excitement and anticipation, ready to see what they can learn each day.
My Project
I am requesting a large, oval shaped classroom rug to hold daily meetings and circle times on. This is the central hub of our classroom and we spend a lot of our day learning, playing, singing, dancing, and reading there. The rug I have chosen has ladybugs, letters, and numbers on it and is full of bright colors that will attract young children to it and help them get excited to learn.
Getting this rug for my classroom will make a major impact in my students' lives.
Having something so bright and fun will bring a refreshing lightness into their day and fill them with joy. Being able to look at the letters and numbers around them will help them get up close to those numbers and letters in such a personal way & will increase their abilities to learn how to read, write, and count.
