My students need a scanner so that they can all have access to the math notes that I provide in class once they are scanned and I place them online for them.
I remember what it was like being a middle school student and forgetting my homework or not getting all of the notes when I was out sick. This scanner would provide students access to my notes and homework online whenever they need it.
I am a 7th and 8th grade math teacher working in a rural community in Maine.
My students are tech savvy, they love working with their laptops. Every student has a laptop provided by the State of Maine. The school has less than 400 students attending grades 6 through 8. My students play sports and sometimes leave early for away games and are unable to obtain the notes quickly. This scanner will allow them to obtain the notes after their game and be ready for the next day.
My Project
This scanner will add one dimension to how my students receive notes. As of right now, the only way to get the notes would be for them to take them in class. Once the notes are scanned and uploaded to the website anyone can use them, including parents. Having a scanner not only helps the students, but, it helps the parents as well by knowing where they can go to get the notes. Parents often voice their concerns about being able to assist the students at home because the math taught at this age has progressed to a point that they are not able to actively keep up with the pace. These online notes will allow the parent to keep pace with the child in the event that the child needs assistance at home.
This project builds a bridge not only between teacher and student, but, between the teacher and the parents as well.
Having both the parents and the students accessing their homework and notes online ensures the child has what they need to learn in my class. It is my hope that other teachers follow this type of proactive approach of bridge building so that, in the end, the student benefits.
