I teach a wonderful class of 32 fifth and sixth graders. Of the 32 students, 4 are English language learners from various countries, bringing a diverse culture into the classroom!
My class loves to read!
It's their favorite thing to do, and has greatly helped them raise their grades and comprehension levels. There are varying levels of readers in my classroom from 1st grade all the way to 9th grade. What makes my class so special is the willingness of students to help those who struggle.
Normally, my students read books and novels for their own reading level, but because my class loves to read so much, we work on a novel study together about every 2 months. This is normally a 5th-6th grade book that we can all enjoy and work on as a classroom community. It allows for good discussion and collaboration.
"The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" is a story that I think will engage my class as a whole and foster their love of reading and interest in non-fiction novels.
"TIME for Kids" will be a beneficial independent reading source for students to continue to enjoy non-fiction information, news and articles.
