The students that enter my classroom are an exciting group of young adults. I host students for not only English class, but also for speech, journalism and the after school extra learning opportunity. My group loves to read, listen to music and read about current events. There is such a need for current, diverse literature for these young minds who want to soak in as much as they can.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and therefore want to read books with main characters who also come from diverse backgrounds!
Some of you may be wondering: Doesn't GHS have a library? Yes! We do! However, I pride myself on fostering the "non-readers" by giving them opportunities to read in a safe place, without having to venture down to the unfamiliar territory of the library.
I pick up most of my classroom novels from Goodwill or the sale bin at big box stores. The problem is, most of the novels have a very similar character set as the protagonist: a straight, white person! These novels are great, and they still get read - but there is a large percentage of my class who simply cannot relate to this.
My Project
Reading is an important element in life, no matter where a young person goes. We read to learn, for enjoyment, to become better people. Unfortunately, school can sometimes turn students away from reading; they learn to hate the simple act of reading.
My goal is to help students remember the enjoyment they can find in reading for pleasure.
However, that is easier said than done! The moment I tell students "Okay, we are going to go down to the library to check out books", I've lost over half of my class. The library is scary and overwhelming.
But, when I print pictures and post on my board new books that are in my class library or we have free time, without a fail my "non-readers" will finally venture back and feel they are in a safe enough place to find a book that interests them.
That is why it is so important to me to have a wide variety of diverse novels available in my classroom. I want each student who walks into my room to be able to find a book that they can relate to, that pushes them to be better readers, that excites them!
