This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students' life experiences and circumstances vary greatly as do their learning needs and styles. Many of my students arrive every morning without proper sleep, nutrition, and hygiene, which many of us consider "the basics" and 100% of our students qualify for free lunch.
My school has over 50% EL learners and by embedding reading into all parts of their day, I can show them how fun it can be and give them the drive and perseverance to push through when it gets tough.
It is critical for us to provide them with increased support, opportunity, and resources. As part of "Mrs. Copeland's Reading Corner," I will have books at each grade level for students to read in my class or check out to read at home, as well as incentives for practicing reading independently
While there are many elements of their lives that are beyond our ability as a school to reconcile, I feel it is my responsibility as an educator and member of this community to do whatever I can to get them excited about learning, equip them for the future, and make them believe in themselves and who they can grow to be.
My Project
I am new to this school and already have great ideas to help improve student learning. The items that I have requested will encourage to read for enjoyment and give them a variety of books to explore.
The books that I have requested will give students an opportunity to read both in my room and the opportunity to check the books out and take them home to increase their enjoyment of reading.
The tent, rug, and pillows already have a place in my room to help my students have a cozy place to relax and read.
