This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As educators, we know that academic success is not the only measure of a student's growth and development. In order for our students to thrive both in and outside of the classroom, it is crucial that they have a safe and supportive environment to address their social and emotional needs.

An SEL space provides students with a designated area where they can engage in activities that promote self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and healthy relationship-building.

It offers them a place to process their emotions, develop coping strategies, and practice conflict resolution. By creating an SEL space, we can foster a positive school climate and cultivate a sense of belonging among our students.

I believe that implementing an SEL space in our school will have numerous benefits. It will help reduce behavioral issues, improve students' mental health and well-being, and enhance their overall academic performance. Additionally, it will provide us with an opportunity to integrate SEL into our curriculum, promoting a comprehensive approach to education.

With the assistance in purchasing these items, I will be able to create a designated space within my office that students can utilize on a daily basis when the need arises. Each tool was picked out with the current student climate and needs in mind. As a school counselor, I have found that many students are struggling with self-regulation which leads to behaviors within the class that prevent them from fully focusing on classroom discussions and learning. Thus, the student falls behind academically. The need for more resources to help students combat this challenge is great within my school.
