As a North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher in a low-income district, I am tasked with teaching my students to be financially fluent in both their personal lives and business applications. Teaching them the values of financial independence and business acumen is very rewarding.
Many of my students are from homes and environments that rely exclusively on financial assistance from the government.
The CTE program allows students to apply acquired financial skills to real-world scenarios and recognize the impact their decisions have for the future. Because the majority of my students have not been exposed to real-world financial applications, it is always rewarding to see their excitement when they master an application and an entrepreneurial spark ignites.
My Project
Research indicates students learn best when they are able to collaborate and talk through their ideas. Currently, my classroom has long tables with computer desktop stations impeding class discussions.
Setting up a collaborative workspace would allow my students the research-based benefits of round table discussions and work sessions.
Specifically, having round tables in the classroom would give the students a place to work while facing their group members and teammates. In addition, having a surface to write and express their ideas as they are brainstorming business ventures will allow them to expand on their creativity. The goal of their collaboration is to prepare our students to be able to work together and become better communicators for their future careers.
