This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My art students are all boys that range from the age of five to eleven years old. Every child at our school falls below the poverty line. We serve families in Sarasota and Manatee County.
Art is extremely important in early childhood education.
It helps young students develop many useful skills. These boys are super smart and very creative. They look forward to visual art everyday.
We use art to express and explore feelings that we normally wouldn't talk about.
My Project
I am actually working on a couple of projects. First, I have been asked to work on a project with a friend who used to teach poetry at the school and we often collaborated on projects with the students.
He's doing a huge project with an organization that provides services for the homeless.
He's been doing poetry/spoken word workshops with these clients, and I would love to create a portrait of each of them to go along with their poems. This work is important to my classroom because I believe all educators should be role models and do the things we expect of our students. I believe that art should be used to make a difference in the world. This work will be an example that shows my students how art can impact society and why it's important. I will use both the portraits and poems to start important conversations in my classroom.
These supplies would also be used to create portraits of the 5th graders. There are only 11 students in 5th grade and my plan is to give them paintings of themselves as a graduation gift this year. The sooner I can begin working on both of these projects the better.
