Help me give my students a library full of 50 books that demonstrate multicultural representation and promote a diverse love of reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 7-8 year old children in Southeast, Washington D.C. My students are eager to learn, excited to experience thoughtful education, and seek to explore how they can grow academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Being in 2nd grade, they're learning how to read independently and can't wait to develop their comprehension and fluency skills.
A huge part of sparking their interest in reading is being able to see themselves reflecting in the text they engage with.
I want my students to see themselves in every page they read. Using texts that focus on stories of Black and Brown people will allow our classroom to thrive academically and socially.
These books will be used to plan and implement our instruction throughout the year. By using interactive read-alouds, close reading, guided reading, and exploration projects, students will engage in self-reflection and grow their literacy skills.
For example the book Pink Is For Boys by Robb Pearlman will be used to examine our identities and provide students the opportunity to explore sides of themselves they feel like they have to hide.
The library in our classroom will be used as a resource for students, parents, and teachers to use to promote multicultural representation, expression, and self-confidence inside the classroom and at home.
