Mr. J's Lack of Library

My students need 45+ books to expand our very small class library.

My Students

I am a first year teacher. The room I inherited had no books in it. I have spent about $400 dollars to create the small library. Some students are frustrated that we do not have enough books to "choose" from. I would like to enlarge the size of our library with more choices.

My students are absolutely amazing.

I have twenty-five students who are with me all day long. I have three special educations students after lunch. We are a title one school with declining enrollment. There are some students who do not have access to pleasure reading books at home. So it is up to me as their teacher to provide as many books for those specific students as possible. Other students have access to books at home. For those students I would like to expose them to different types of books than they are normally used to reading. Most of the books in my classroom library are picture books I can use during my instruction. I would like to get some great chapter books and novels for them to read. I had a student tell me the other day, "I just need there to be more books in here so I can pick different books, instead of the same ones." I completely agree with this student. I would like to increase the size of our library, affording them the chance to pick what they like.

My Project

The books I have requested are from differing genres. Some are picture books, others are chapter books, some are classic novels, and some are biographies. These different books will allow me to greatly increase their exposure to different genres. I unfortunately have some students who enjoy reading only one genre. With the donation of books will be effectively be able to give them other "options" for their reading. Other students are struggling readers. I have shared with them that the only way to become a better reader is to read, read, read. Have more books in our library will let them choose which books they will use to practice and become a better reader. Some of the books from my list will be used for whole class as well as small group instruction. The fourth grade science curriculum covers biomes. I will be able to use some of the books for that instruction. From this instruction students will be more prepared for their end of the year tests.

If a student struggles or believes that they are a poor reader, this impacts the rest of their education.

If they cannot read they cannot learn. I have a few students who are reading at a mid second grade level. I need to inspire those as well as all my students to be excited about reading. Using the books requested on my list will make that desire become a reality. I also want to inspire my students to want to increase their own personal library. I can do this by increasing our library.
