My students are English-Language Arts scholars in 7th grade. 73 of them are in Accelerated English class. 80 are in regular 7th grade English.
My students face many challenges that are common for teenagers today.
Some are free-reduced lunch eligible. Many of my students don't have access to libraries and reading materials outside of school. All that aside they inspire and amaze me every day with their persistence and resilience in their education. I want to improve their educational experience any way that I can.
My students participate in the Accelerated Reader program. This program helps them find books that are relevant to them and at their appropriate reading level. The students read the books, take quizzes on them to demonstrate comprehension and then earn points from the quizzes. Earning high amounts of AR points qualifies them to enter drawings for cool prizes. This AR program does an outstanding job of encouraging reading and making it fun.
I need my classroom library stocked up with more of the books middle school kids love reading.
That way I can have even more success promoting reading and getting kids to earn AR points. Another great outcome of this is their reading levels going up which positively affects their education in so many ways.
