Even very young children love games, gadgets and technology. However, at the high poverty school where I teach, the students have very little or no access to computers at home. Their computer access at school is also limited to a 40 minute session once a week in the computer lab.
I teach a K/1 combination class in rural North Carolina.
We are an extremely high poverty, Title One school. Over 90% of our students are free/reduced lunch. Our students represent a multiculturally diverse and disadvantaged population. Growing up in poverty, these kids are missing the rich language and and vocabulary at home that most children take for granted.
My Project
I am requesting four tablets. It would be amazing to see what my kinders and first graders would be able to do if we had a center with 4 tablets. There are apps for every student, from magazines, to books, to games, to flashcards. Can't read yet? There are plenty of books that have a read aloud feature. Fluent reader? Research and higher order thinking skills! No social studies textbooks this year? That's OK, we can pull up the interactive textbook version on the tablets. Math games and virtual manipulatives? There is an app in Google Play for you too. There are tools for every subject and for every student, regardless of their academic skill level.
I bring my Ipad to work every day.
My kids are totally mesmerized by it. They use it in small groups and in pairs playing games. It has been an amazing teaching tool for my special needs students. There's even an app to help my speech kids! This project will open up a whole new world to a classroom family who have so little. It is only with generous donations that I am able to provide items to enrich the lives of some very bright kids that might otherwise fall through the cracks.
