I am a 5th grade teacher in Hunley Park. Hunley Park is a beautifully diverse Title I school in North Charleston. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We have a growing Hispanic population that makes it very common to hear students interchanging between Spanish and English in classes and the hallway. We also have some nice supports at our school to help us meet the unique needs of Title I education, such as mental health support and Communities in Schools to make sure students have all the things they need. However, I am concerned that my students are not getting enough experiences outside of the classroom to make connections to the learning and life lessons I provide.
In my classroom, I have stressed the importance of pursuing higher education and all of my students have the goal of going to college in the future!
As a graduate of Coastal Carolina University, it has always been a goal of mine to bring a class back to my alma mater. Please consider helping me show my students how fun learning can be!
My Project
The students will spend the day exploring Coastal Carolina's campus and learning about what it means to be a college student. The students will get a guided tour in the morning from the Admissions Office, lunch in the Dining Hall, then will be receiving lessons on college life from the CCU Cohort of the Call Me MISTER program.
I want my students to see a concrete example of how far their learning can take them.
By showing them people who look similar that have made it from similar neighborhoods all the way to CCU, I am sure my students will be inspired by this experience. I am also confident this will rally my students as they prepare for standardized testing in May.
