My students need LEGO WeDo 2.0 to do wireless building and coding, LEGO Boost to experiment with all sorts of amazing coded creations, and the OSMO coding kit to improve our coding abilities!
Our classroom is a "forward thinking" learning area. I incorporate traditional learning values with exciting educational opportunities. As STEAM learning is pushed toward the forefront of education, I am trying to embrace it. I want my students to have the chance to continue building these skills with the best equipment available.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and encompass a wide range of learning styles and talents.
Our school embraces this and tries to vary our lessons and activities to fit these needs. So, over the past few years, I have created my own little Maker Space in my classroom. Through building, coding, and creating my students have developed many new skills and have gained an excitement for STEAM. I'm looking forward to building more of this excitement in years to come.
My Project
These building and coding materials will add yet another interactive opportunity for my 3rd graders. Over this past year, our 3rd grade team has found a way to bring STEAM activities to all of our 3rd graders by using my "makerspace" materials. However, the amount of coding that I can offer is very limited outside of websites. These products bring actual student creations to life through the application of basic computer coding skills. As our world changes, students need these skills to prepare themselves for future computer education and to make themselves more marketable in a growing, technological economy. Furthermore, many students find this type of learning to be a great avenue to success when they may struggle in other learning capacities.
