This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are looking for a chance to be successful in life. According to state demographics, 98% of my students last year were classified as economically disadvantaged. Their struggles in school are directly related to their home life. Still, they fight on and work hard.

My students are resilient in the face of their hardships.

For many of them, English is their second language, but they work hard and have big dreams. I want to offer them every opportunity I can to give them the opportunity to achieve those dreams.

My Project

The "Who Was" series of books are easy and fun to read. They are engaging and my students love them. I will use this set of books for book reports and extended reading for students to gain a greater appreciation of history. Too often, historical texts are not accessible for English Language Learners.

This collection of books is diverse, interesting and entertaining enough to reach every student in my class.

We all have a natural curiosity in where we came from, but it is our job as teachers in making that information accessible enough to be interesting. These books will give students access to different historical figures from different backgrounds.
