Many of the students in our small urban school come from a high poverty area. Over 80% of our children receive free or reduced lunch. My students are full of energy, and love coming to school to learn.
I would love to give them the opportunity to be able to have a selection of different seating options in our classroom so they can choose what learning space works best for them.
Many things have changed in education, however, most students are still required to sit for seven hours...on the same chair! Even adults who sit and work in a coffee shop choose to sit in a manner that may be different from other patrons. Some stand or sit at a counter, some sit at a table and some may sit on a couch.
My Project
All of the items I asked for will benefit my kindergarten students by allowing them opportunities to move which can enhance the learning process and help them to work collaboratively with their peers. Bouncing, standing, leaning against a wall, squatting on a ball, even sitting on the floor means less fatigue and better concentration.
Research states the impact of movement in the classroom can be profound.
Children should avoid sitting for too long. When teachers implement flexible seating in their classrooms their students' were more engaged in learning and critical thinking, their grades improved and participation increased with more invigorating conversations.
