I have the opportunity each day to work with the most incredible young people. My students are excited to be at school and they fill our room with excitement and a love for learning. I have 21 unique students that make my job as a teacher, wonderful.
I believe children should be able to learn in an environment that is supportive of their individual needs.
One aspect of my classroom is that I allow students to stand, pace, or move when needed. Over half of my students need to be moving while they are learning. Due to challenges, not in our control, that we faced this past year, I was never able to complete the project for flexible seating in my classroom as I had planned. I am thankful to be moving to 4th grade with my students and hope to create a classroom of flexible seating.
In our classroom, we work daily to be kind and understanding individuals. The students "catch" someone being kind and reward them with a sticker and recognition. We have truly created a 'family' in our classroom and I want to make the environment the best I can for them.
My Project
In a classroom of 21 students, over half will ask to stand at different times during the day. Many students need movement to help them focus on heir work and to be comfortable in class. I know as an adult, I do not learn well when I have to sit for long periods of time. How can I expect my students to do something that I can't do?
Movement in the classroom is needed and I want to provide a room that will ensure all students are comfortable and learning .
When students need to stand or pace, it can be disruptive to the classroom. Using stability balls will allow the students movements without disruption.
Stability balls will also help teach responsibility to the students. Rules for bouncing and taking care of the balls will help the students to show some self-control and responsibility. Several teacher friends have told me that stability balls are a benefit in the classroom.
