Marzel is a very active student in my classroom. Each day he comes to class with a lot of energy and ready to learn. With all of his energy he struggles to focus at times.
All of my students love to use the bike desk that we have in the classroom. Marzel enjoys using this bike desk and asks to use it everyday along with many other students. We only have one bike desk. Once he found out we could get more bike desks through the help of great donors that want to turn his dream into a reality he was ready to start this project. Many students learn best when moving and it helps them to pay attention. They want to succeed in the classroom and they know that movement will help them.
My students have been learning how to share the one desk with each other. This project in particular helps students to learn about their own learning style so that they can put themselves in an environment of optimal learning. As this young man works on this project he is learning to think about other students and express his thoughts and needs in writing. He is also stepping into the role of a selfless leader that is looking to the interests of others.
In Their Own Words
I want students that have a hard time staying still in class to have the chance to use a bike desk because is helps me to stay focused. As students we are asked to sit still for 90 minutes in each class. Many of us get in trouble because we want to move around so much. The bike helps me to focus and I want more students to have this opportunity.
Everyone in class knows that I move around a lot. They have seen how much using this bike as helped me both mentally and physically and they want to use it too! We all share the bike on rotations, but two more would give more of us more time on the bike. Everyday multiple students are asking Ms. Manna to sit on the bike desk, I want to help more students use more bike desks in class.
The bike desks helps me to focus and pay attention in class so that I can learn. More of these desks will impact more students and more learning. Studies show that physical activity in the classroom improves learning and decreases disciplinary problems. Many of the students in my class have ADHD and these fit desks help us to focus and stay out of trouble. I am trying to improve the learning of my peers.
