My Pre-K students either have disabilities, have already fallen behind in basic skills, or are economically disadvantaged. Our program packs a lot of fun active learning into our day, including plenty of time to play outdoors.
Outdoor play is important to our students for many reasons. It is no secret that America's youngsters are getting less exercise and obesity is a problem nationwide. In North Carolina, the legislature is addressing this problem by beginning to regulate sales of high calorie/low nutritive value snacks in our schools. However, physical activity is very important in this battle against childhood obesity. Many of our students live in areas where there is no appropriate and safe area in which to play, and many of them spend hours each day watching television or playing video games. In view of the lack of appropriate physical activity at home, it is even more important that we provide a plentiful and varied program of outdoor activities. In addition to reducing obesity and promoting good physical health, outdoor play has a positive influence on the cognitive and social/emotional development of children.
Our outdoor time includes use of play equipment such as balls, sandbox, swings and riding toys. We have tricycles but other wheeled toys are very limited. Since we do serve many children with a variety of disabilities, some of the students have a difficult time sitting on and pedaling a tricycle. For these students, and to vary the activities available for all students, I would like to increase the variety of our wheeled toys available to the children. I am requesting three Cozy Coupe riding toys for use by our entire preschool program.
Our children will benefit physically and mentally by the addition of different types of riding toys. Thank you.
