It is a happy talent to know how to play.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
My students are 3, 4, and 5 year olds in a large K-8 school in an urban school district.
Some of the children are English Language Learners and others have special needs, such as Down's Syndrome or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Children come from diverse families and neighborhoods. All of my children are full of energy and all of the children love to spend time outdoors. They are talented and know how to play!
My Project
We go outside everyday. Children will use these materials to develop their gross motor skills and eye hand coordination. They will also practice social skills as they play alongside their friends digging in the dirt, drawing on the pavement, or creating their own games with hula hoops and playground balls.
Not all children have access to outdoor space in their neighborhoods.
Giving my students a variety of engaging materials will allow all children to have fun, daily outdoor experiences. Preschoolers need positive ways to release their energy and enthusiasm. Children who have opportunities to move throughout the school day are more focused during story time and have a greater attention span for working on challenging tasks, such as completing a puzzle or writing their names.
