Hooray! This project is fully funded

As a special education teacher in District 75, New York City's district for students with severe disabilities, my upper elementary students with autism have a wide range of abilities. Learning to read is not only a step toward communicating and processing in an essential way, but for some may be the first step toward success in a general education environment. Some of my students are starting to master their beginning reading skills by matching shapes and letters and attending to stories read out loud. Others are diligently mastering more advanced reading skills through a combination of phonics exercises, computer programs, and writing activities. However, one significant thing that my classroom lacks is books! My higher-functioning readers have grown bored with the small selection of kindergarten books that we have available in our classroom library, and I am eager for them to move on to more advanced books. Unfortunately, since my class is the only upper elementary class in the special education unit, my school has only provided books that are appropriately leveled for our unit's younger students. I would greatly appreciate a set of books that my higher-functioning readers can take on, because to learn to read, we need more than phonics, computer programs, and paper: we need books please!
