Today's students are motivated by technology. Imagine functioning behind your peers at the high school level, it is easier to act out than it is to let others know you don't understand. Struggle each day to grasp basic concepts needed to be successful. Access to technology is their motivation.
My classes are made up of special education students who struggle daily with one or more of the following, learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, Bi-polar/mood disorders, social and emotional disorders.
These students face challenges in all aspects of their lives. They try hard to understand new material presented often 3-5 grade levels below where they should be functioning. For these students traditional methods of teaching have not been successful and they required thinking outside of the textbooks to access their education.
My Project
With the ability to access 3 tablets in the classroom students will be able to work on apps designed to help with their executive functioning skills which will allow for success not only in the classroom but in all aspects of their lives. Students will be able to access programs to support their reading comprehension, and math skills. Having this technology in the classroom students can move into investigative learning which will help build lasting connections to their learning and their life.
Giving students with special needs access to this technology in the classroom helps them step out of a traditional learning environment into an investigative learning style, helping them to see the importance in their education as well as have fun learning.
