Help me give my students the classroom they need to foster collaboration. Flexible seating will enable my students to learn appropriately to their individual learning style.
My classroom is an exceptional group of students who all have their individual talents and needs. They all follow an adaptive curriculum that assists in modifying and adapting activities to best suit their learning styles. My classroom is cross-categorical, having disabilities range from severe/profound to mild intellectual disabilities. Most of my students need assistance with everyday tasks, such as starting a conversation with a peer, personal hygiene and counting money.
My students are all unique learners, coming from various backgrounds and families.
They are hard working high schoolers who love to learn functional academics and skills that will help prepare for life after graduation. With new furniture and opportunities for flexible seating, my students will have a learning environment more conducive to their needs.
My Project
According to the NEA article “Understanding Universal Design in the Classroom,” the learning space is an important aspect of the whole educational experience: “One cannot have a community of learners without having a positive instructional climate. Instructors help to create this climate by everything that they do, from the way they respond to student questions to the arrangement of the classroom chairs.”
With flexible seating to include stand up desks, collaboration desks and wobble seats, my students' classroom will now more efficiently mirror the real world.
Classrooms should not just be the standard desk and chair, but have the flexibility for students to move around and share ideas with one another. In my life skills classroom this is imperative. My students have various needs and learning styles and a diverse classroom environment will mirror what they will encounter out in the community and in post secondary life.
