My school services over 750 Pre-K through fourth grade students. We are a high poverty area with a very transient population. The majority of our students are on free or reduced-price lunch.
"Increased physical activity during the school day can help children's attention, classroom behavior, and achievement test scores.
Meanwhile, the decline of play is closely linked to ADHD; behavioral problems; and stunted social, cognitive, and creative development." - Darell Hammond
This year I teach 44 students. Students come to school eager to learn each day, but with limited physical activity throughout the school day, students' attention decrease. With so much technology in today's world, many students do not engage in physical activity outside of school.
Many of our students do not participate in after school sports because transportation is an issue for many of our families. The students get very little physical activity during the day. We have a ten minute recess built into our daily schedule and try to include PE during their French time.
My Project
Having jumpropes, catch and throw games, and lawn toss will give my students a variety of activities to play during indoor or outdoor recess, as well as during PE. Our school does have a playground area, however; when it rains, the grounds stay too wet for the students to go on for days. The area that does dry quick has nothing for them to do. It's just an empty grass area or cement slab. The limbo set, soft ring toss, and jumpropes will provide the students with activities to do.
The play equipment would provide them some exercise and allow them to work on their social skills and hand-eye coordination.
Many of the games requires them to work with others or as teams. With so much technology today, students are not socially interacting with others as much. The games will help build social relationships.
The ring toss, limbo set, ball hop, and catch pads can also be utilized during indoor recess or mini brain breaks.
