Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has adopted a Project Based Learning Model (PBL).In order for PBL to be successful, our students need experiential learning. The challenge is finding funding for buses needed to take all 134 students to the Youth Science Institute to study the geology of CA. We are "Rockin and a Rollin!"
Our students are primarily from middle to low income working class homes.
We are eligible to receive Title I funding, and all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We have a "Safe Schools" officer on campus every day and many of our students receive counseling services offered by the city and by our district. Although there are many challenges that our students face- from hunger to gang violence, we are dedicated to providing a top notch education to all of our students. It is the access point to experiential learning that our students need in order to have a well rounded education.
My Project
We would like for our sixth grade to attend a "Youth Science Institute (YSI) in order to gain a deeper understanding about the geology of the Earth... Imagine seeing layers of earth that show the concepts of folding and faulting, and smelling the sulfur from a spring that comes from deep within the earth. Or seeing fossils of seashells high up in the mountains- you can learn about the why and where of these geological events in a textbook, but observing, touching, and smelling these things heightens the comprehension of these concepts. We have the funding to participate in this wonderful program that is less than 10 miles away- we just have no way of getting our 134 sixth grade students there.
Field Trips are designed to help make conceptual understanding more concrete.
Taking our students out to YSI in Alum Park and giving them the opportunity of seeing that the Earth is constantly changing, may inspire some to become more interested in sciences; for others it may inspire them to become environmentalist. What it will do for all is help them recognize that they have wonderful resource where one can play, take a walk or hike, and appreciate the nature around them.
