Moving Beyond the Walls of the Classroom with Digital Storytelling
My students need a MacBook to enable them to work collaboratively to complete their digital storytelling assignments. These projects get my students to think critically and move learning beyond the walls of my classroom.
Teaching fourth grade at C. Elementary is a tremendous honor. However, teaching at a low-income school has been a real eye-opener for me. The students I teach come from families who are broken, economically disadvantaged, homeless, and are food scarce.
Through it all, I have made sure that even though my students were only going to be in my class for one year, it was going to be the best year of their lives.
Through my enthusiasm and my attempt at engaging lessons, I have been able to hook my students and allow them to look forward to coming to school each day.
This is important to me because no matter what problems they face at home, coming to school and sitting in my class is a break.... A refreshing break away from their lives at home. Throughout my seven years of teaching, I have not only taught my students grade-appropriate content, but I have also taught them life skills such as honesty, humility, kindness, and respect. I have instilled in them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
In my class, I bring learning to life by assigning various interactive games, assignments, and projects that require my students to think critically. This MacBook will greatly facilitate my students' ability to complete their digital storytelling assignments.
These digital storytelling assignments challenge my students to go beyond the textbook and relate new information across various content areas.
This MacBook will also enable my students to create engaging student products that encompass the skills that they have mastered.
Our school is very limited on technology equipment. In fact, many of my students have never had the opportunity to hold and utilize technological devices. Currently, my students have to get into groups of 2 to 3 students to share one device in order to complete their assignments. This donation will allow for more personalized learning and improve student success.
