My Students

We are a very diverse public school where at least 65% of the students are low income or on free or reduced price lunch. The students love to come to the art room and work, some even come in during lunch just to work on art. This year I even had a waiting list for art club!

There are approximately 600 7th & 8th grade students that come from a variety of backgrounds.

They love to try new things, and are always sharing the newest app they are using or photo they are taking on their phones. Many are interested in formal photography but don't know where to start. I would like to give them that experience.

My Project

Student's are always on their phones. They take video and pictures of everything. So many are interested in what would be considered formal photography but don't know where to start. I have been unable to offer formal training to students due to not having access to digital cameras. I want to open their eyes and their world to new possibilities.

Through this project students' will not only achieve a greater understanding of what goes into taking a photograph, but it also encourages them to explore, discover, take risks, and express themselves in a new form.

Giving our students access to new technology helps empower them in ways they never thought possible. This is something they will remember the rest of their lives and use in life outside the school setting.
