Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need a wide range of seating choices that allow them to wiggle while they work. The wobbly chairs will give students another choice besides standing, sitting in a chair or sitting at the carpet.
My Students
Our school is a low-income school with 100% free breakfast and lunch. Students walk into my classroom each morning with hope for their future, endless amount of energy, but also barriers due to health impairments and/or learning disabilities.
My students encounter many barriers that most of us could never imagine, however, they come to school with an upbeat and positive attitude.
They are prepared to work hard and persevere even if the learning gets difficult. With this new seating option, they get to stay active while they learn. Yeah...moving to learn and learning to move. Everyone wins!
My Project
In the past, we have given students with ADHD and sensory needs regular exercise balls to help them focus. These balls proved to be effective in allowing them to wiggle around while in class. The only downside was that the exercise balls could be squeaky and students could even slide/fall off of them. Over the last few years, they have come up with safer and more efficient options. The 5 wobble chairs I am requesting have a convex base that allows movement in all directions. My students will be able to safely sit at their desk while burning off some excess energy. The movement that students will be able to do on these wobble chairs will help create a positive learning environment. They will be able to focus longer, retain more, and be more likely to succeed in school.
Having alternative seating in my classroom will help my students engage and break barriers; they will learn to move and move to learn.
Every year, I get new students with unique learning styles. These seating options will be used with this years' students as well as future students. This project will continue to help students for years. As a teacher, I want to make sure I have a variety seating choices to allow students to find their best learning environment and learn to their highest potential. With these alternative seating options, my students will be able to discover their best learning environment. Additionally, they will be able to move while they learn.
