Moving and Learning

My students need balance balls to replace traditional chairs and make learning more active and comfortable.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be a quickly growing (pre)teen and have to spend the majority of your day seated? Me neither! But I do not imagine that it would feel very comfortable.

My students are very curious, hard working and intelligent.

Our school is very diverse and has a strong World Languages program. The majority of my students come to me with a very high level of Spanish, some are native speakers, and others are learning Spanish as their third language, but they all work together to help each other learn and succeed.

My Project

Some of the rewards for using exercise balls in the classroom are simply this: happy, focused, and productive kids. Whether sitting on an exercise ball, disc, wedge, or cushion, movement increases focus and concentration. A 2008 study found that children actually need to move to focus during a complicated mental task. The children in the study—especially those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—fidgeted more when a task required them to store and process information rather than just hold it. This is why kids fidget at school or while doing homework, but not while watching a movie. Increasing students’ activity level in the classroom provides physical benefits, as well, such as improved posture and stronger core muscles.

The research suggests that letting the students fidget will likely keep them focused on learning by stimulating their brain.

Though tiny, these movements also "sneak in" some exercise into the school day and even improve the students' posture.
