Moving and Learning: Flexible Seating for Kindergarten!
Help me give my students more flexible seating options for my classroom. I am requesting cantilever chairs and wobble chairs so my students can pick where they would like to sit each day.
My kindergarteners attend a school in upstate NY serving a mainly rural community. These students are just beginning their educational careers and it is our goal to help them be engaged with the learning process through multiple strategies and with movement.
My students love to move while they are learning!
Each day, my students move around the room to complete their activities. We learn through songs, movement, and hands-on activities each and every day. They are such hard workers! At times, it can be difficult to sit in their seats for paper and pencil jobs.
My school serves students in preschool through fourth grade. All of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch and many families have difficulty providing supplies for their children's education. Our district also provides breakfast, lunch, and snacks to each and every student in our district that learns from home or on a hybrid schedule each week. While their home lives may be difficult at times, we try to make their school day engaging, enriching, and most of all, fun! Please help us help our students succeed!
My Project
I have a few wobble chairs in my class right now and my students love them! They are able to move in their chairs while we are learning and are not a distraction to their friends. I have noticed a great difference in some students who were unable to sit for 5-10 minutes, and would like to help even more of my students with the option for flexible searing.
Flexible seating has been so beneficial in my classroom for my kindergarteners.
I hope that we get to try out the cantilever chairs, too! They are a discreet type of flexible seating that will again allow my students to move around while maintaining good posture. These options are also great because they can be easily cleaned so that more than one student can use it.
Providing my students with a choice of seating can also empower them to be more independent and can encourage positive decision making. They don't always get their choice of activities that we do in the classroom, so giving them the power to choose something will help with classroom management as well!
