This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a diverse inclusive classroom of low-income students aged 3 to 5. For most of my students, this is their first learning experience. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. We are located in the inner city of Pittsburgh and provide a free comprehensive program that is designed to nurture and support each child as we prepare them to transition to kindergarten.
My students are very interested in learning about letters, math social studies, engineering and science, and enjoy exploring with technology.
They are dreamers, thinkers, and questioners and love to discover new things about the world around them. Despite the challenges they face they come to school each day ready to work and play with smiles and positive attitudes.
My Project
Outdoor play is a big part of Pre-K. We try our best to get the children outside every day that the weather allows. It is so beneficial to get fresh air and exercise.They need to burn off energy while learning to socialize through play. A lot of times, children are expected to sit during the school day to learn what they need, but often they can't focus if they haven't had a chance to get active!
Being able to move and have outdoor playtime is an important part of their day!
Having materials such as a balance beam, platform stilts and hop-a-long balls will assist in helping with developing and strengthening balance, focus and large motor muscles. Fine motor skills will improve when the children use things such as the bean bag toss, ring toss game and bowling sets. Having a variety of materials to meet the interests of all the children will help them be able to make choices and use their various fine and large motor skills to improve and grow while having fun!
This equipment will promote a sense of confidence, decision making, and will allow the children to experience the social cue of taking turns, promote hand eye coordination, and reinforce confidence too. These are all important skills that students need to develop at an early age, especially in the world of technology, where kids are not moving as much as they should be!
